LOW COST HOUSING

Background

RGVN has been in the "development" sector for more than a decade. RGVN's aim has always been to improve the quality of life of the poor - "food", "clothing" and "shelter", a prerequisite to it. The NGO Support Program and the Credit and Savings Program has been able to cater to the first two requirements of a better quality of life. Rural development not only encompasses livelihood promotion but an overall improvement in the living conditions of the poor ….. , and "shelter" is one of the important development indicators.

Realizing the importance of shelter needs, RGVN took the initiative of collaborating with HDFC during the year 1997-98 for implementing the Low Cost Housing Program inspite of a long term nature of the loan and risk involved - as the NGOs especially in the Northeast were nascent and not used to handling "large" credit. Towards Low Cost Housing Program in Northeast and Bihar, RGVN has disbursed an amount of Rs 117.86 lakh for construction of 375 houses at an interest of 9% per annum. The Low Cost Housing Program in Orissa was undertaken during October 2000, subsequent to the super cyclone in Orissa. RGVN has disbursed 175 lakhs for construction of 500 houses in Orissa.
